In the January 2010 issue of Informer, Michael Tona and I argued that the 1928 convention was a sort of coronation, recognizing Giuseppe "Joe the Boss" Masseria of New York as the new boss of bosses of the American Mafia. Critics of this view note that Masseria was not one of the out of state guests at the Hotel Statler. However, much of Masseria's family lived in Cleveland. It is far more likely that he would have stayed with his family than at a hotel.
